Electrolysis vs. Laser Hair Removal-Licensing Requirements/Training

Differences between Laser Hair Removal and Electrolysis

  • There are 5 million Hair follicles in an humans body.
  • There are between 65 and 120 hair follicles per sq. inch on the skin, with     the upper lip having the most.
  • DNA results are found in the upper hair bulb.
  • "Horney Pilation" is the medical term for "goosebumps".
  • Hair starts to regenerate themselves after 10 weeks.
  • All hair follicles have a sebaceous (sweat) gland, responsible for hair growth and  acne.
  • The heat created by Electrolysis discourages the hair to regrow in the follicle.
  • 3 Growing Stages of Hair:

1)Anagen-active, growing stage of hair. Best for Electrolysis                   treatment the most cellular destruction can be done in this stage.

2)Catagen-starting to separate from the dermal papilla (nutrition source).

3)Telogen-separated from dermal papilla and doesn't get enough heat. A                 telogen hair will need to be treated again and will grow back more active.

  • When a Hair is "Plucked" it is pulled out from the dermal papilla which causes the body to react,  sending more blood supply to the follicle. This process damages the follicle and creates a darker, more coarse hair.
  • 5 Causes of hair growth:

              1) Congenital- Exists at birth

              2) Systemic- Affects the whole body:

                   a) Normal- Puberty, Pregnancy, Menopause

                    b) Abnormal-Certain aquired infections, Glandular Defects,Dietary                                  Deficiencies,and other diseases.

              3) Topical- Waxing, Tweezing, UV Lights, Plaster Casts, Friction.

              4) Emotional- Stress
              5) Medical- Certain Medication ie: Birth Control Pills, Cortisteroids
  • Hypertrichosis- Hair growth that is in excess of what is normal.  Hypertrichosis is "overgrowth" of where hair is normally located.
  • Hirsuitism- Excessive hair growth in a male pattern, ie: beard, chest and abdomen. Hirsuitism pertains to females defined as "abnormal" hair growth.
  • 3 types of Hirsuitism:
              1) Iatrogenic- Hirsuitism caused by Medical treatment.
              2) Idiopathic- Hirsuitism caused by an unknown origin.
              3) Familial- Hirsuitism genetically inherited.
  • 4 Glands related to causing hair growth:
              1) Adrenal        2) Ovaries       3) Pituitary      4) Thyroid
  • 3 Causes of hair growth on women:
              1) Puberty        2) Pregnancy  3) Menopause
  • 2 Factors that initiate/accelorate hair growth:

              1) Increased blood supply

              2) Hormonal stimulation
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), sometimes referred to Stein Levinthal Syndrome is a health problem that can affect a womens hormone levels, periods, and ovulation. This can lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease. Symptoms may include:

            Acne.

            Weight Gain.

Male pattern baldness or thinning hair on scalp.

Excessive hair growth on the face, back, chest, abdomen.

The cause of PCOS is not fully understood, but genetics may be a factor.

Home treatment measures can help you manage the symptoms of (PCOS) and live a healthy life. Weight control/loss lowers your risks for diabetes, high blood presssure, and high cholesterol, it can also improve high androgen levels, and infertility. Excessive hair growth (hirsuitism) improves when high androgen levels improve. As a part of PCOS treatment, along with medications, you can remove unwanted hair with Electrolysis.

 ELECTROLYSIS VS. LASER HAIR REMOVAL

There are many reasons why electrolysis is the wiser, superior and more effective method of hair removal than laser.

Did you know that electrolysis has been around for 125 years and is the only method of hair removal considered permanent by the FDA? Laser hair removal is considered permanent hair "reduction" (rather than removal). It has only been in existence for a few years, so it's effectiveness is still being studied.

Connecticut State Law states that laser hair removal can only be performed by a physician, physicians assistant, or a nurse under the direct supervision of a physician. There are no guidelines for training in the use of lasers. Most laser operators have no formal training beyond the few hours provided by the Laser Manufacturers. In Connecticut, Electrologists must have 600 hours of training at an Approved School and pass an exam given by the the Connecticut  Board of Health and State Electrology Board in order to be licensed in the State of Connecticut.

Laser  treatments should not be performed on or around the eye area. So if you are considering having your eyebrows treated- Electrolysis is completely safe and your best option.

Laser treatments are limited by the color of the skin and the color of the hair. The laser beam is attracted to the melanin ( dark pigment) in the hair, and therefore does not recognize white or blonde hair. It also is not effective on dark skin because the laser is attracted to the color of the skin rather than the hair! However Electrolysis works on all skin and hair color types.

Because of it's...Superior effectiveness, ability to permanently and safely remove all types of hair on all body parts, proven sucess rate and strictly regulated standards and practices, Electrolysis is the best and safest choice for all of your hair removal needs!

lASER TREATMENTS MAY  ACTUALLY INCREASE HAIR GROWTH              LASER is actually a REDUCTION of unwanted hair, and has not been evaluated by the FDA as a PERMANENT hair removal source.

One real big inquiry as an electrologist I receive is "why" does it seem that I'm getting more hair since my Laser Treatments have begun?

My answer to that is, we as people have millions of hair follicles some lay dormant while others as we all know grow. Always infact where we don't want them to!!  These millions of  follicles are all capable of hair production. Laser and waxing stimulate hair growth because they don't single out unwanted hair, these treatments effect all, including those follicles which had laid dormant. Thes follicles start producing active hairs. The body reacts as damage is being done to the subcutaneous skin layer and unfortunately the body tries to repair the tissue by introducing new blood cells and oxygen to the "injured "area. Ultimately a new hair grows.

Differences Between Laser Hair Removal and Electrolysis
There Are Many Differences Between Laser Hair Removal and Electrolysis, Which is Best for You?

Many of us would love to find a way to remove hair and never have to shave again. Two types of hair removal that are becoming more and more popular are Laser Hair Removal and Electrolysis. Both techniques are much different from one another and choosing which is best for you before jumping into it is very important.

Laser hair removal is done by moving a laser over the area where the hair is. As the laser is moved, the light goes through the skin and pigmentation and then is absorbed by the hair follicles. Although it is not completely understood how this damages the hair follicles, it is believed that the heat from the laser breaks apart the follicles. Over the course of 2 to 3 months, the hair will start falling out. The pain associated with this procedure is much like a rubber band popping the skin. Laser hair removal is usually 4 treatments being eight weeks apart from one another.

There are several things to take into account before choosing laser hair removal because it does not work for everyone. It works best on people who have light/fair skin with darker hair. The darker the skin, the more likely the laser will absorb into the skin before making it to the hair follicles. If you are looking for immediate results, this procedure is not for you as it can take up to a year before seeing the full results. There is also a chance that your skin could be burned due to the laser which will cause brown spots to appear. A slight loss of skin pigmentation is also a possible side effect.

Electrolysis is the only method proven to completely stop hair growth. A very fine needle is inserted into the skin to reach the hair follicle. Once it reaches the hair follicle a small amount of electrical current is applied to the hair follicle to permanently destroy it. There are 3 different methods of electrolysis to choose from. Galvanic uses galvanic electricity which is also known as direct current (DC). When the needle is inserted into the skin it interacts with the bodies salts and moister and a minute quantity of lye is produced. The lye destroys all the hair and tissue it contacts. Thermolysis also known as high frequency (HF) uses alternating currents that completely kill hair growth cells with heat. The follicle tissue is agitated by heat which is hot enough to destroy the area around the agitated follicle. Blend is the third choice and it combines both Thermolysis and Galvanic.

The pain associated with Electrolysis has been described as a warm sensation or a hair being plucked. The length of the process depends on many things such as skin type, amount of hair and medical conditions. There are a few things to consider before deciding on Electrolysis. If you have a pace make or an IUD, it may be required that you have a written note from your doctor to giver permission for this procedure to be done on you. The reason for this is because a pace maker and an IUD both have metal in them which already produces a small amount of electricity and that electricity along with that produced from the procedure could be dangerous. The rates of Electrolysis can vary from place to place and most places charge by the hour or half hour. There will be skin irritation afterwards and scabbing is possible, if this happens you should not scratch the area. There is usually no permanent damage caused from this procedure.

As stated before the only procedure that will guarantee complete hair loss and completely stop the growing of hair is Electrolysis. For more information on either of these procedures you can call your local doctor or spa to be pointed in the right direction.
